The variety of painting materials used in manuscripts requires the use of multiple, complementary analytical methods in order to clarify their identity. All the methods we used are non-invasive, meaning that no samples were removed from the manuscripts in order to analyse them. The instruments were placed close to the painted surfaces without ever touching them.
