The Macclesfield Psalter

Litany with collects

Texts and Images

Despite the inclusion of St Edmund of Bury among the martyrs, St Botulph among the confessors and Saints Osyth and Etheldreda among the virgins, which may suggest an East Anglian origin, the Litany, does not point to a specific location. Furthermore, it shows no bias towards any religious order and contains no mendicant saints.

The initial extends into a three-sided bar border incorporating foliate motifs. A hybrid formed of two conjoined animals is depicted in the bas-de-page.
