The Seven Penitential Psalms (6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129 and 142) were recited as prayers of contrition. The first of them, Psalm 6, received a large miniature of Christ in Majesty accompanied by the Evangelists’ symbols. The remaining Penitential Psalms open with ornamental initials.
