Hand D

Artists

Hand D was responsible for a cluster of four full-page miniatures (fols. 59v, 60r, 61v, 63v).

He emulated the delicate facial expressions and broccoli-like trees of the Gaibana Master, but his drapery folds are as schematic and his compositions as crowded as those of Hand C. Like Hands A and B, he mixed woad in his flesh tones, but his palette is strongly characterised by the use of an ochre pigment in yellow areas.

This miniature shows Hand D’s emulation of the Gaibana Master’s facial types and his characteristic use of an earth pigment for yellow areas.
