The Psalter-Hours of Isabelle of France

Collation

Description and Contents

The manuscript has 28 quires. The structure is regular and carefully planned in view of the textual contents. All quires consist of six bifolios except quire 21, which has only two (all that was needed to complete the Hours of the Virgin), and quire 22, which has five bifolios accommodating the Penitential Psalms. The volume was made of two building blocks. The first one (quires 1-16), which contains the Calendar, Psalter and Canticles, has no quire and leaf signatures. These appear only in the second block (quires 18-27), which contain the Hours of the Virgin and the texts that follow it. The quire and leaf signatures are: a1, a2 and so on in quire 18; b1, b2 and so on in quire 19 (see fol. 204r); down to i1, i2 and so on in quire 27. The quire signatures (a, b, c and so on) are included in round brackets after the quire number in the collation diagrams.
