The 2019 Glanville Lecture will be given by Dr Koen Donker van Heel (University Lecturer in the Papyrological Institute, at Leiden University). In his talk Papyrus BM EA 87512: Always Look on the Bright Side of Wife? he will examine a newly acquired papyrus by the British Museum dating to the 7th century BC. This presents a great number of difficulties. First: it is written in abnormal hieratic, a dreadful shorthand. Second: there are many women in it who are clearly acting in some professional capacity. But why? And where does this papyrus come from?

Dr Donker van Heel is an expert in later ancient Egyptian scripts -- abnormal hieratic and demotic -- and legal texts written in those scripts. Outside the world of Egyptology, he is a copywriter and communications consultant, mainly for government agencies and ministries, trade & industry and research organisations. His books include Djekhy & Son: Doing Business in Ancient Egypt, Mrs Tsenhor: A Female Entrepreneur in Ancient Egypt and Mrs. Naunakhte & Family: The Women of Ramesside Deir al-Medina.

Please note that this lecture will take place in Mill Lane Lecture Rooms.
