The Learning Department engages in research to build our understanding of the value of museum collections and programmes on learners and audiences, and to investigate and develop our practice as educators.

Current research interests include:

  • the development of practitioner led research with very young children;
  • how to measure the impact of museum programmes on children and young people (through our AHRC funded Practical Evaluation project);
  • how museum learning programmes can support the development of visual literacy and the teaching of art and design
  • the links between cultural learning, attainment and engagement for children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds;
  • the health and well-being benefits of cultural engagement.

We welcome opportunities to collaborate with researchers in fields such as museum studies, cultural policy, education, health and wellbeing.
