Schooled in drawing by his father and half-brother, Reinhold studied in Germany, Vienna, and Paris before settling in Rome. Along with his compatriots, Carl Wilhelm Götzloff and Carl Blechen, he was part of a group of notable German artists working in Italy who would have a great effect on German landscape painting. His training as an engraver and illustrator influenced his work considerably and is evident in both his unconventional approach to composition and his precise manner of drawing.
