Hansen spent nine years training at the Academy of Architecture before transferring to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and Christen Købke between 1828 and 1833. As a landscape painter, he retained his interest in perspective and architectural detail. On his way to Italy in 1835, he traveled through Germany and stayed with his friend, painter Christian Morgenstern. He returned to Denmark in 1843 and became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, joining other Danish Golden Age painters such as Vilhelm Kyhn, Johan Thomas Lundbye, Martinus Rørbye, and Frederik Sødring.
