For the last ten years The Fitzwilliam Museum has offered SOURCE over and beyond the spring half-term, supporting GCSE, AS/A Level and BTEC Art and Design students as they prepare for their exams.

Based in the informal atmosphere of the Fitzwilliam studio, the Museum Education team and freelance artists offer one-to-one advice to students. We can help students to research their exam theme by giving access to the wealth of ideas and inspiration in the work of other artists. To do this we offer starting points, gallery tours and advice on how to make the most of our on-line resources.

In addition, the artists and art materials in the studio are available, and not least the space - both mental and physical - to work which is not always so easy to find at home. Artistic support is available in the media of drawing, painting and printmaking each day, and also encouragement to draw from observation in the galleries.

SOURCE has been shown to help students meet the Assessment Objectives set out in each exam paper, and to improve their grade. Why not try it?

Plus Friday 22 February, Your Portfolio Review day led by Anglia Ruskin Art. Lecturers and artists working with you in the collections at the University of Cambridge Museums: 

 

NEW Art and Mindfulness, two 45 minute afternoon sessions led by an experienced Mindfulness therapist designed specifically for students of any subjects experiencing exam stress, learn how to focus, relax and be present in the moment. 

The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, The Polar Museum, Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, The Whipple Museum, The Botanic Garden, The University Museum of Zoology and The Museum of Classical Archaeology. 

Students are welcome to return to the Fitzwilliam Museum to continue with their research and ideas in the Museum studio with Artists and Educators on designated days. 

FREE. Drop-in: no booking required.

Teens Gallery Art Guide to the Fitzwilliam Museum

This summer we are pleased to offer young people aged 11-18 YEARS a self-led museum guide to 4 of the Fitzwilliam Galleries.

Packed with ideas and activities to suit all interests from Dutch Flower paintings, the dark symbolism of The Salvator Rosa to contemporary sculpture and ceramics.

Get sketching, start an art investigation or strike up art themed discussions as part of a your visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum with family and friends. Teens summer gallery art guide are FREE and can be collected from the entrance desks along with drawing materials or bring your own sketch book to record your visit.

Work Experience

Work Experience Taster Days

There are 30 Work Experience Taster Day places available each session, held twice a year. If you are between the ages of 13 - 18 and interested in a place, please email your name and the school you attend to the University of Cambridge Museums Opening Doors Project Coordinator at

Work Experience Taster Days are held three times a year, please visit Get Involved on the UCM website for future dates.

Work Experience Placements

The University of Cambridge Museums offer work experience placements in June and July for school-aged participants, providing them the opportunity to spend a week learning new skills and developing their self-confidence, timekeeping and communication.

During their placement work experience students spend half their time at the Fitzwilliam Museum and half their time at one of the other University museums. They undertake a short project ‘Curating a Personal Story’ where they are required to select two objects from each of their host museums and two from home, bringing them together in a mini exhibition which tells a story about themselves. At the end of the week the students present their mini exhibition to a small group of museum staff.

 

 

Art and Design Exam Themes

 

Welcome to the Fitzwilliam Museum, a great place to introduce your students to their mock and actual Exam research for GCSE, A Level and BTEC Art and Design.

Each year we prepare a selected itinerary that matches key objects from our collection to your exam themes. We suggest that you read the attached PDF which is divided into the various Exam Boards, this may well help you prepare your students for your Self Led Session in the Fitzwilliam Galleries.

Your students are encouraged to draw from the real objects, record information and their own thoughts and ideas, it is a good idea to start them off with one or two objects, explaining details on the object labels each have museum accession numbers, a unique catalogue code they can then use to search for further information on line back at school or college.

Photographing objects can be helpful but nothing beats drawing from the objects.

This is for Teachers as you may well not have released exam papers to your students.

Students may also enjoy researching at the other University of Cambridge Museums which are just a 10 minute walk.

Arts Award

Arts Award inspires young people aged between 5 – 25 to grow their arts and leadership talents. Arts Award can be achieved at five levels, four accredited qualifications and an introductory award.

The University of Cambridge Museums can play a part in your Arts Award programme. We can devise, support and deliver your award across the eight University Museums and collections. Whether you are a school, community group, or individual, we can partner you with an award advisor. The University of Cambridge Museums offer all levels of Arts Award, for which more information can be found on our blog.
