We believe that the Fitzwilliam Museum is a place for everyone.

We also make the most of the museum as a space for everyone to enjoy. By helping to make connections between people and our collections and celebrating these conversations, we hope that everyone will feel at home at the museum. 

What do the Fitzwilliam Museum’s community programmes do? 

We work with community partners to create opportunities for people to connect with the museum. 

Our focus is on ability over disability and we carefully design our talks, tours, creative workshops and outreach sessions according to the specific needs of our visitors.

We offer:

-    Projects and programmes promoting wellbeing through coming together to connect with each other and the collections;
-    Touch tours and audio described tours for individuals or groups who are blind or partially sighted;
-    Gallery sessions and art workshops for local community groups, many of whom have specific needs.

Our community offer has been impacted by COVID 19 and some of our programmes are being delivered remotely. You can enjoy our Objects in Focus: Relax, Look, Imagine films which offer the opportunity to step into an artwork and take the time to feel how it resonates with us through 1 17 minute guided looking experience:

Dance and Time with the Museum: Creative programmes with older people

Thanks to the Building Connections fund, the Fitzwilliam & University of Cambridge Museum consortium are extending their offer of free activities for older people throughout Cambridge and Cambridgeshire South. These activities aim to tackle loneliness and social isolation in older adults.

Two distinct programmes ‘Dance with the Museum’ and ‘Time with the Museum’ are on offer, each containing three, 1 - 2 hour sessions per term that can take place where older people live, meet up, use or find support. A taster session to see if this is a good fit helps to get things started.

Dance with the Museum

‘Dance with the Museum’ is an established programme that the Museums are growing. Developed in collaboration with residents from Cambridge City sheltered housing schemes and the City Independent Living Service, participants have been keen to make sure that more people can enjoy and benefit from a programme they describe as 'beautiful', 'very relaxing, very important' and 'a real release'. 

In each session, participants begin with relaxation, then move into looking at and reflecting on two or more artworks on a given theme. People then share their responses, building up group and individual understanding and then explore these through music, gentle movement and dance.

Time with the Museum

‘Time with the Museum’ is more informal. These sessions involve relaxation with music, exploration of artworks or museum objects on a specific theme, discussion and the sharing of feelings and thoughts about the collection items, building-up group & individual responses.

And we always end with refreshments!

‘Time with the Museum’ can be a stand-alone programme or be used as a ‘taster’ for ‘Dance with the Museum’ workshops.
