The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge with designated collections of international importance, a staff of c.200 FTE, and a volunteer workforce of 100+. The Museum houses over half a million works of art and antiquities spanning centuries and civilisations and displays them in 23 galleries. There are also stores, offices, education rooms, studios and conservation laboratories across six buildings in Cambridge, all of which require constant inspection and regular maintenance.  All parts of the main museum building are Grade 1 listed, and must meet stringent government indemnity and insurance standards for the security, care and display of works of art, particularly in relation to security, building maintenance and environmental conditions.

We are now recruiting a Head of Facilities & Visitor Experience who will report to the Assistant Director, Operations and Engagement, and be responsible for Facilities, Security and Visitor Services, supporting the strategic and effective operation of the museum.

Delivering a high quality service across the Museum, the role holder will:

  • Provide leadership for the Facilities, Visitor Services and Security teams at the Museum;
  • Champion and facilitate excellent service and experiences for visitors, staff and other users;
  • As the lead for security and visitor services, provide management and leadership to the Visitor Services Manager, Security Managers and their respective teams;
  • As the lead for buildings maintenance and facilities, be responsible for building development, maintenance and project management; including the oversight of building and maintenance projects, contractors, service standards and service level agreements across the organisation.
  • Working closely with colleagues throughout the Museum, oversee the Museum’s environmental action and emergency plans.

If appointed you will be responsible for leading and managing the biggest group of staff in the museum and manage the areas which carry the greatest reputational risk: the security of the museum buildings and the collections; the experience and safety of staff and visitors, the maintenance of the building and environmental conditions, and all aspects of the visitor experience.  The ability to lead and manage change in a large and diverse team will be one of your strongest attributes.

As well as leadership and change management skills and experience, you will need a multi-disciplined and multi-skilled approach to problem solving, and have excellent communication and customer service skills combined with attention to detail. You will also have a good knowledge of the issues associated with museum or heritage environments and maintenance of listed buildings.

Offers of employment will be conditional upon the satisfactory outcome of a Basic Disclosure check via the Disclosure and Barring Service and references.  Whether outcome is satisfactory will be determined by the University.
