The Psalter-Hours of Isabelle of France

Song of Songs

Texts and Images

Chapters 1-5 from the Song of Songs were read on Saturday, the day dedicated to the Virgin. They open with an image of the Virgin and Child. The text and image show the water damage that the manuscript suffered when the collection of John Boykett Jarman was flooded in 1846.

This is one of the most seriously damaged images in the volume. There is no conclusive evidence of its restoration during modern times, although a small area within the pink chest has a glossy, transparent layer which may be a trace of a past intervention.
