The Psalter-Hours of Isabelle of France

Blanche of Artois

Owners

Louis IX’s niece Blanche, daughter of Robert of Artois, married Henry III of Champagne and Navarre in 1269. The obit of Robert of Artois in the Calendar would have been equally relevant to his daughter and to his sister, Isabelle of France, but less so to the other royal women.

This is one of the two prayers in the manuscript which reveal that the manuscript was made for a woman. The words in female forms can be seen on text lines 7-8: ego misera et indigna peccatrix (‘I, the wretched and unworthy sinner’).
