The Crucifixion and the Beatus initial, which were painted on either side of the same leaf, are the only figural images in which vermilion was used in red areas rather than simply to highlight the flesh tones, and where a greyish hue is present in the folds of some of the robes. These small differences as well as the variety of substrates for the red dyes and of base layers for the yellow dyes may suggest either that these two images were painted by a different artist than the historiated initials or, more likely, that he lavished more attention and precious materials on the full-page images than on the historiated initials.
