The Hours of Philip the Bold

Master of the Girart Burial Scenes

Artists

This Brussels-based artist painted the miniature of the Elevation of the Host (fol. 193v) in the second campaign. He is named after the images he contributed to Philip the Good’s copy of Le Roman de Girart de Roussillon (Vienna, ÖNB, MS 2549, fol. 181r), a manuscript on which he collaborated with Dreux Jean.

This 15th-century miniature was painted by the Brussels-based artist known as the Master of the Girart Burial Scenes. Angels attend the priest as he elevates the Host. The altar retable shows the Carrying of the Cross, Crucifixion, Deposition and Resurrection. It is surmounted by folding side panels depicting the Virgin and Christ in Majesty.
