The Breslau Psalter

Hand F

Artists

Hand F made the second largest contribution to the Psalter. He painted four full-page miniatures (fols. 72v, 85v, 98v, 113v) and four large historiated initials (fols. 75r, 88r, 101r, 116r), all distributed among four quires. He collaborated with Hand A in three of the quires (10, 12, 14). Hand F’s salient features include gold-tooled frames, elongated figures with small heads, elaborately knotted belts and ‘ankle warmers’, and grey outlines of limbs (except on fol. 72v). He shared a palette with Hands E and G.

This initial painted by Hand F illustrates the first verse of Psalm 97, Cantate domino (‘Sing ye to the Lord’). It shows David enthroned and pointing at clerics who sing out of a Choir Book.
