Coorg Medal, 1837

The East India Company established its rule over most of India with an army largely composed of Indians, known as Sepoys, whose service was recognised by medals often designed by local goldsmiths. Unlike the submission depicted on the Burma Medal, here an Indian rebel defiantly brandishes a knife and a musket.
The medal bears no name, so its recipient remains obscure. Lester Watson bought this medal at some point before 1928; its previous provenance is unknown.
