Dürer here combined the image of Nemesis, classical goddess of retribution (she carries a goblet and bridle representing favour and castigation), with the traditional winged figure of Fortune standing on a globe. He probably took the idea from the Latin poem Manto (Mantua) by the Italian poet and philosopher Angelo Poliziano, which had been printed in Venice in 1498. The extensive landscape below is a view of Chiuso in the Tyrol, probably sketched by Dürer during his journey to Italy in 1494-5. It is a virtuoso display of the engraver's art, for which Dürer's training as a goldsmith stood him in good stead.
