Collotype and screenprint on Ivorex paper, 1984
Given anonymously 1991
Based on Hamilton's 1974 watercolour Europhotel., which he adapted and altered by overprinting a collotype of the image with eighteen stencilled screens. The watercolour was itself derived from a postcard of the lobby of the Hotel Europa in Berlin, which Hamilton later visited, commenting: 'There was only one position in which a camera could make an interesting shot and it needed a much wider angle than my 35 mm lens. The postcard photographer had found just the spot and ... possessed the [exact] lens to perform the magic.' Hamilton went on to make paintings and an installation of the same subject.
The print was made in Stuttgart: the screenprinting was done in collaboration with Frank Kicherer, Stuttgart, and the edition printed by Eberhard Schreiber. It was published by Waddington Graphics, London
