produced this print the year that his house in Pingjum, Friesland, caught fire, destroying his work and most of his possessions. The tragedy catapulted him into the limelight, with a string of exhibitions culminating in one at the Institut Néerlandais in 1970. Pannekoek is a self-taught artist and his subjects range from landscapes and ruined houses to shells, fruit and dead animals. The latter are executed in drypoint and have a particular emotional intensity. The nebulous, atmospheric quality of this print is strongly reminiscent of Whistler and the 17th-century artist Hercules Seghers.
