Georges Rouault 1871-1958
Nude in profile
Photogravure and aquatint printed in colour, 1936
Bequeathed by Miss Diana Hunter 1985

From the second series of prints inspired by Charles Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal. The rich surface texture was achieved through a complex process of photo-mechanically transferring the design of a painting or gouache drawing onto the printing plate, and then extensively reworking the surface with aquatint. This laborious process meant that this print retains some of the impasto of the original design. Rouault was assisted in the technique and use of colour printing, which involved using several plates, by the master printer Roger Lacourière, who also introduced Picasso to the use of aquatint.
