Max Klinger 1857-1920
Bear and fairy
Etching and aquatint printed on chine collé, 1881
Bequeathed by Henry Scipio Reitlinger 1991

From the portfolio of twelve etchings entitled Intermezzi opus IV, published in 1881 by Theodor Stroefer in Nuremberg. The title of this portfolio and the 'opus' numbers that Klinger assigned to his prints make deliberate reference to music, which he thought to be analogous to his art. Klinger felt that whereas colour was well suited to naturalistic artworks, black and white, especially used in prints, was better for works of fantasy, as it left more to the imagination. Klinger's often bizarre subjects provide a link between the themes of German Romanticism and the psychological concerns of Expressionist artists, such as Edvard Munch.
