The Department of Coins and Medals embraces money in many different forms, from all parts of the world and spanning ancient to modern times, as well as medals since their origin in the Renaissance. With its rich collections and library, the Department is a centre for research and teaching in numismatics.
A portrait medal of Mark Blackburn (1953-2011) was commissioned by friends and colleagues to mark Mark’s twenty years as Keeper of Coins and Medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Only twenty-three New Zealand Crosses were awarded, and still fewer are known today. Investigating the history of the Museum's example, which was awarded to Antonio Rodriquez of the Taranaki Mounted Volunteers, led not only to a surprising amount of material on the man and his subsequent life, but also to the mutual discovery of three branches of his descendants.
