Opening from ‘The Medici Psalter’

Gherardo and his brother Monte, the distinguished Florentine artists who assisted Ghirlandaio on various projects, illuminated books for the wealthiest rulers of Europe. This manuscript was made for a member of the Medici family, whose arms and devices fill the borders and opening words of Psalm 1. Medallions with the Annunciation, Nativity, Last Judgement, and prophets frame the miniature of King David in prayer within borders in the jewelled all’ antica style, rich in vases, candelabra, plump putti, and precious stones. The exceptional nature of this commission is confirmed by the gold lettering and the dyed parchment, both elements of ancient imperial and Carolingian manuscripts revived in the Renaissance.
