A rider on a rearing horse, drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, c.1481

In 1481 Leonardo received a commission from the Convent of S. Donato a Scopeto, near Florence, to paint The Adoration of the Magi, now in the Uffizi, Florence. The painting was left unfinished when the artist went to Milan in 1482 to work for Lodovico Sforza. Many preparatory drawings exist for the painting; this study is thought to be for the fighting horseman in the distance on the right.
