Portrait of an Indian Prince, by John Smart, 1788

John Smart was a highly accomplished miniature painter, who was known for his meticulous attention to detail. Despite his considerable talents, he did not receive much patronage from the Royal family and in 1785 went to work in India, where he spent almost all his ten years in Madras. While there he was miniature painter to Muhammad Ali, Nawab of Arcot, and four miniatures of him by Smart are known. This is thought to represent Nawab’s grandson.
