Scent bottle

Scent bottles could be kept close to the body or suspended from a belt or chatelaine. The scent bottle from Naples displays the political affinities of Lady Mary Hervey (1700–68), whose personal arms appear on one side and a portrait of the exiled claimant to the throne, Charles Edward Stuart, popularly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, on the other. Personal love and political loyalty could be expressed simultaneously in small tokens or objects, even for the less well-off, in the decades after the English Civil War.
