Wickham Market Hoard
This hoard of Iron Age gold coins or staters was found at Wickham Market in north Suffolk. These coins were issued by the Iceni tribe, whose most famous leader was Boudica. At the time of the hoard’s burial in AD 15 the Iceni may have been afraid of invasion by neighbouring tribes. Perhaps the hoard was intended to be used to pay warriors to defend the Iceni. Remarkably this is the largest hoard of Iron Age gold coins (840 specimens) discovered since 1849.
The acquisition was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2011.
