Commodore Perry and the Opening of Japan: Naval Diplomat and Collector

A display of the little-known coin collection of Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858), the American naval officer who famously opened up Japan to the West in 1854. Perry’s varied collection spans Ancient Greece to the modern world, and provides a tangible link with this bold and significant historical figure.

The display is accompanied by a virtual exhibition.
