Planning your visit

The collections are arranged in 30 galleries on two main levels. These divide roughly into paintings, drawings, sculpture and furniture on the first floor and applied arts and antiquities on the ground floor (see Museum Floorplan). There are also regular temporary exhibitions.

The length of an average visit is approximately 2 to 3 hours, during which time it is possible to see a wide range of objects in the collection. However, the length of stay will depend very much on the interests of the individual visitor and many people enjoy a whole day at the Museum, taking lunch in the Courtyard Café. Families with younger children can book out the Fitz Kits free of charge to take children on an adventure tour through the galleries.

Gallery Closures

We regret that from time to time some galleries are closed to the public for refurbishment or redisplay.

Galleries 12 & 11: The series of spectacular exhibitions at the Fitzwilliam continuing through 2012 will involve the temporary removal of displays of 20th century art in the Adeane Gallery (12). Early 20th century art will continue to be shown in Gallery 11 until January 2012.
