TT99: 'Archaeology in action' -- cleaning wall paintings

Here you see a video made in October 2001 of Julie Dawson cleaning an area of the TT99 ceiling. She has already checked for major problems with the plaster, but she starts by gently tapping the surface to make sure there are no further loose or friable areas. The surface is then gently brushed to remove dust; the main cleaning is done with small pieces of Wishab sponge, a soft crumbly dry, vulcanized latex material which takes off soot without damaging the underlying paint.
