View of old gallery

The old displays in our two main Egyptian galleries were designed in the 1960s. Since then there have been huge advances in the design of museum cases, in terms of lighting, security and environmental control. The old design of the galleries also provided storage areas for objects that are not currently displayed.

As part of the project, the old cases are being stripped out and new purpose-built cases are being fitted. These will allow the objects to be better displayed, in well-controlled conditions, which will keep the objects better protected.

The removal of the storage areas will also make more space in the galleries, giving us more space for school groups and talks in the galleries, for example.
