Description

Whitework sampler made of two kinds of linen. Joined strips enclose a cutwork panel with linen thread in needle lace filling stitches. A second panel is also worked with linen thread in hollie point with picot bars. The bottom strip is embroidered with linen thread in satin and double hemstitch. The edges are finished with buttonhole bullions. The upper band consists of geometric shapes whilst the bottom band is figurative, containing a male and female figure, possibly depicting Abraham and Sarah. Beneath is the inscription 'Elizabeth Hinde 1643' embroidered in white linen thread.

Production Notes

The figures probably depict the story of Abraham and Sarah, as illustrated bibles were a popular source of inspiration for pattern drawers and embroiderers.
