Notes | MacDonald dates this drawing 1873-5 and relates the design to matting which appears in the background of Whistler's portrait of Mrs Leyland (Frick Collection, MacClaren Young et al (otherwise abbreviated as YMSM), 106) and in his portrait of Cicely Alexander (Tate). Another similar design for matting in the Fogg Art Museum (MacDonald 493). |
