Notes | MacDonald dates this design 1871-74 and relates to that which appears on Mrs Leyland's dress in Whistler's portrait of Mrs Leyland, in the Frick Collection, New York, (Maclaren Young et al (otherwise abbreviated as YMSM) 106). She also suggests that the French inscription implies that the dress was designed in Paris, although there is nothing to confirm this. Another design for rosettes is in the Fogg Art Museum (MacDonald 434). |
