Etching by Anthony Van Dyck, first state (of ten)

This is an impression of the first state, with only the head and ruff etched by Van Dyck. The background was etched by another printmaker, and the lines are not very successful in the area to the left of the face. As with the portrait of Vorsterman a number of mistakes have been made during the etching process. Acid resistant varnish was dropped onto the wrong areas of the plate, which meant that no lines were bitten into the plate.
