Image["" src="]

Justus Sustermans was baptized on 28 September 1597, and in 1609 became a pupil of Willem de Vos at the same time that Van Dyck was apprenticed to Hendrick Van Balen. In 1616 he left Antwerp for Paris to work in the studio of Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569-1622). In 1620 he moved on to Florence, forging a career as a portraitist in the service of Cosimo II, and the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. He died in Florence in 1681, but also worked in Vienna for Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor.
