Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536)
The scholar and philosopher Erasmus encouraged humanism in the belief that changes in the Church would prevent a Protestant split. He remained a Catholic while men like Luther and Calvin broke away in the Reformation. Erasmus had an acute interest in his own features. Hans Holbein went on to paint him three times, and one of the paintings was probably the source for Van Dyck's etching.
