l'Intelligence fut à moi! Je devins le Buddha!
(Intelligence became mine! I became the Buddha!)
Plate 12 of 24
The Buddha appeals to Anthony, telling him of his similar solitary existence and temptation by the Devil. The choice of this image allowed Redon to develop a theme: spiritual enlightenment through knowledge. The subject seemed increasingly to interest him and signalled a new direction in his late noirs (see also Immédiatement surgissent and Le jour enfin paraît, which relate to this theme). It also brought a new light to Redon's prints. The entire image is illuminated by the large sun above the Buddha. Sweeping arabesque lines unwind to complete the image of the Buddha.
