This image seems to reflect the Parisian avant-garde's interest in mysticism and the occult. Redon himself was not fully immersed in the current of occultism, but many of his friends and acquaintances were, and it seemed to inspire him to create images such as this. Redon's work was also very popular amongst these circles, and the mystical journal, Le Cœur, dedicated an entire issue to Redon's work.
