Maurice Fabre, wrote the following ekphrastic description (an evocative literary commentary on a work of art) in response to this image in his article 'Critique Artistique: Odilon Redon,' in Le Passant, on 5 February 1886:

On the threshold of a temple, in floating white robes, one of them closes her arms across her breast; another, younger, leans her refined head on the should of her elder companion, and vague and enigmatic smile plays about her lips - it speaks perhaps of some springtime memory, of regret for the pleasures she could have enjoyed; the third figure, more pensive, lets her arms fall in melancholy. The priestesses were waiting! What grateful God will receive the sacrifices their hands have prepared?
