À la Vieillesse (To Old Age)

Plate 1 of 6

Redon wrote his own lyrical captions for this and the Hommage à Goya album. Redon's captions for La Nuit read as a poem when put together:

To Old Age,
The man was alone in a night landscape,
The lost angel then opened its black wings,
The chimera gazed at all things with fear,
The priestesses were waiting,
And the searcher was engaged in an infinite search.

The profile is recognisable as Redon's mentor, Rodolphe Bresdin. The engraver appeared in several of Redon's early works.

P.201-1951(I)
