Copper cent from the Straits Settlements, 1845

The Straits Settlements was a territory amalgamated in 1826 from various possessions acquired by the British East India Company in 1824 in the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of that year. Incorporating the semi-autonomous territories of Penang and Malacca, the group of lands around the coast of the Malay states was governed from Singapore. The territory would be taken over for direct rule by the British crown in 1867, but even in 1845, when this coin of Commodore Perry's was struck, the coinage depicted the British Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
