Portugese 400 reis coin of João VI, from Lisbon, 1807
This silver 400 reis coin was minted in Lisbon in Portugal in 1807, during the reign of King João VI (1816-26). The Latin inscription on the reverse 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' translates as 'By this sign, conquer' and is a reference to the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine I (306-37) to Christianity at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312.
