Jutland Medal, 1915

In the First World War German artists produced many medals commenting on the war in a satirical ‘Expressionist’ style. As Germany’s opponents were usually the target of the satire, the artists were contributing to the German war effort with their own kind of propaganda. Walther Eberbach’s The Battle of Jutland shows the figure of death looming over a sinking British ship.
This medal was given to the Fitzwilliam Museum by E. Evelyn Barron of Peterhouse in 1951.
