Description

Bronze. The long neck of the kundika flares out in the middle and terminates in a narrow faceted tube. The rounded body tapers towards the splayed foot. A well-proportioned filling spout is attached at the widest part of the vessel and has a flat hinged cover. The plain surface is patinated in places.

Production Notes

The kundika (chongbyong) was used as a pure-water sprinkler in Buddhist ceremonies. Some bronze examples are decorated with inlaid silver and similar vessels also exist in celadon (C.55-1984). Such elegant kundikas were widely made in the second half of the eleventh and in the twelfth century.
