46 Wooden headrest

Zimbabwe, Shona
First half of the twentieth century or later

Wooden headrest on a double lobed base with a raised surface on which there is a large flat vertical support carved to form negative space creating three lozenges in the centre, and four triangles at the top and bottom. The surface is decorated on one side with a wave-like pattern and stripes; on the other side the surface is decorated with irregular geometric panels of vertical, diagonal and horizontal stripes; other panels have raised dots, with in one case a zigzag pattern.

The platform curves upwards at the ends and has a convex upper plane; the ends are decorated with a zigzag pattern. The platform slopes towards the head of the user. There is termite damage on the underside of the base.
