45 Wooden headrest
South Africa, Zulu (?)
First half of the twentieth century or later
This long wooden block headrest has a support decorated with six flat carved panels, different on each side. One side has four zigzag-shaped grooves externally and two central panels that have the appearance of serrated edges. The other side has a similar design on the outer four panels, and here the central two panels are decorated with an incised abstract geometric design with an enlarged serrated design at the top and bottom and a large incised vertical groove and four sets of double diagonal lines, the top one rising and the lower descending.
In between these six panels are six indentations with a raised centre. The platform is slightly curved and very slightly convex and there are two parallel incised grooves before the ends suggesting the form of bindings or rope. Tool marks are visible on the surface.
