38 Wooden headrest

Sudan, Dinka
First half of the twentieth century or later

This wooden headrest is carved out of a single branch of wood and is on three legs with a double-layered platform. The ends of the platform terminate in what appear to be two animal heads with a pattern of ridges, six on one side and four on the other, possibly representing the neck of an animal. There is considerable wear to the bases of the legs, and the surface is covered with wear and tear marks, including a large split and an old local repair.
